Giving Thanks
There is a lot to be thankful for this thanksgiving and as we move into the holiday season! It can be quite easy to be wrapped up in the day to day mess life brings us but I become constantly reminded of a quote I heard from Max Homa a few months ago.
When asked how he handles stressful moments on the golf course during a post-round interview, Homa replied with a simple yet powerful tip: “Whenever I feel I get antsy, I just say three things I am grateful for. It kinda calms me down.” He goes on to mention people are going through a lot more than him being nervous on an 18th tee shot.
Max Homa - Positive Affirmations
When reflecting on this message, and his affirmations, it became quite apparent to me the amount of perspective Homa has, especially for an athlete who has been on a tear the last two years. From a fan’s perspective, we tend to put athlete’s on a pedestal where they are supposed to be selfish, not get nervous, and where winning at all costs can’t happen unless you are those things. Homa has proved that wrong.
The game of golf has given me a whole bunch in my almost decade playing it. Friends for life, coaches who share constant wisdom, and a school that has given me so much. Yet the most important thing I am thankful for is the support from both friends and family. While they may not know how I feel all the time, the support and love is always felt.
It is the numerous texts after a good round, or not so many after a poor round; both of which I am thankful for. It is for the friends I haven’t seen in years throwing out compliments and asking questions, which I am very thankful for. It is the tough love and honesty from mentors that I am thankful for.
It is definitely a lesson for me, and maybe one for us all, to take an extra second, and say three things we are grateful for. It might make this meal taste a little better!
